This article discusses layouts, snapshots and templates in Marketscope.

What is Layout?

A layout is a set of charts for a certain symbol and period with all added elements and all settings saved together with arrangement of chart windows.

When you save a chart layout, you save all the charts you see on your screen with all elements and settings.

For example, you have a few charts for GPB/USD with different periods and with different indicators. Your charts are arranged in a certain way:

You can save all your charts with all elements and settings as a layout.

When a layout is opened, each chart with its settings is placed exactly in the same location where it was before, at the moment of saving the layout. Note that when you a open a layout, your current charts which were opened before opening the layout are automatically closed.

To save/open a layout, use the Save Layout/Open Layout commands respectively (File -> Layouts).

What is Template?

A template is a set of saved chart settings, indicators and price overlays with their properties which can be used on any chart.

Suppose you use a few moving averages to confirm trend change. For example, your one-hour chart for EUR/USD has two moving averages: 5-period short MVA and 20-period long MVA:

You can save a template in order to apply the indicators and settings to another chart in the future. That is, when you need to add the moving averages to another chart (with another period or another symbol), you just apply the saved template. So you don't need to configure each chart over again.

To save a template, use the Save Template command (File -> Templates -> Save Template).

You can apply the saved template to a new chart at once when creating a Marketshot (just choose a template in the Create Marketshot dialog) or to any existing chart. To apply a template to an existing chart, use the Apply Template command (File -> Templates -> Apply Template).

After you apply a template to another chart, all elements and settings saved in the template will be applied to this chart.

Unlike a layout, a template affects only the chart to which it is applied and doesn't affect all other open charts. That is, when you open a template, you just apply the elements and settings to a certain chart. All your other charts remain unchanged.

In our example, when you apply the moving averages template, for example to your USD/JPY chart, you will see short and long moving averages on this chart:

What is Snapshot?

When you save a snapshot, you save price data you see on your chart together with all elements and settings applied on your chart.

A snapshot is not updated with new price data.

Unlike a template, a snapshot cannot be aplied to any other charts.And unlike layouts, snapshots can be opened even if you are logged out from FX Trading Station.

The most fresh price on the chart is received at 04/15/2011 12:16. When you save a snapshot and then open it, you will see your chart with all elements and settings. But the most fresh price on this chart is still at 04/15/2011 12:16, even if you open your snapshot in a month.

Layout vs. Template vs. Snapshot

• If you want to take a 'picture' of how a chart looks at that given point in time, you should use a snapshot.
• If you want to apply the indicators and settings of your chart on another chart in the future, you should use a template.
• If you want to restore all charts that you have on the screen in the future, together with all their indicators and settings, you should use a layout.
